How It Works (Formula & Method)

A TV's advertised size is the diagonal of a 16:9 rectangle. From that diagonal the calculator derives the actual width and height using the 16:9 aspect ratio. Recommended viewing distance depends on resolution: higher pixel density lets you sit closer without seeing individual pixels. As rough factors of the diagonal, 1080p favours about 1.6×, 4K about 1.0×, and 8K about 0.5×.

Worked Example

Below is a worked example using the calculator's default values. The same numbers are pre-filled in the form above so you can press Calculate and see the result without typing anything.

Inputs used:

  • Screen Size (diagonal, inches): 55
  • Resolution: 4k

With these inputs, the calculator computes the metrics shown in the Results panel. Change any value and press Calculate again to see how the result responds — the live widget and the chart both update instantly.

Tips & Considerations

These are guidelines, not rules — personal comfort, room layout, and content quality all matter. Sitting closer to a 4K or 8K set fills more of your field of view for a more immersive picture, while 1080p content looks best from a bit farther back so upscaling artefacts are less visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far should I sit from a 55-inch 4K TV?

As a starting point, roughly the diagonal in inches converted to feet — about 4.6 feet for a 55-inch 4K TV — with a comfortable range of about 3.9 to 7.3 feet. Sitting closer increases immersion because 4K resolution hides the pixels.

What are the real width and height of a TV?

For a 16:9 screen, width ≈ diagonal × 0.872 and height ≈ diagonal × 0.49. A 55-inch TV is therefore about 47.9 inches wide and 27.0 inches tall, excluding the bezel and stand.

What does the TV Size & Viewing Distance Calculator compute?

The TV Size & Viewing Distance Calculator takes 2 input values and returns 4 results. Find the optimal viewing distance for a TV by screen size and resolution, plus the exact width and height of a 16:9 panel of that diagonal size.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The TV Size & Viewing Distance Calculator runs entirely in your browser using static JavaScript. Your inputs are never transmitted to CalculatorHive or any third party, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
