How It Works (Formula & Method)

The calculator multiplies each activity by a standard emission factor: about 0.417 kg CO₂e per kWh of grid electricity, 5.3 kg per therm of natural gas, and 8.887 kg per gallon of gasoline (fuel used is annual miles ÷ mpg). Each short-haul round-trip flight is estimated at about 500 kg. The totals are converted to metric tonnes per year and compared with the roughly 16-tonne US per-capita average.

Worked Example

Below is a worked example using the calculator's default values. The same numbers are pre-filled in the form above so you can press Calculate and see the result without typing anything.

Inputs used:

  • Electricity (kWh per month): 900
  • Natural Gas (therms per month): 40
  • Driving (miles per week): 200
  • Vehicle Fuel Economy (mpg): 25
  • Short-Haul Flights (round trips per year): 2

With these inputs, the calculator computes the metrics shown in the Results panel. Change any value and press Calculate again to see how the result responds — the live widget and the chart both update instantly.

Tips & Considerations

These are rough estimates using US-average factors — your real electricity emissions depend heavily on your local grid mix, and flight emissions vary with distance and cabin class. Treat the result as a directional guide for spotting your biggest sources rather than an audited figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gases produced by your activities, expressed as an equivalent mass of carbon dioxide (CO₂e) per year. It typically includes home energy, transportation, food, and goods; this calculator focuses on home energy and travel.

How does my footprint compare to average?

The US per-capita carbon footprint is roughly 16 tonnes of CO₂e per year, among the highest in the world; the global average is closer to 4–5 tonnes. This calculator shows your home-and-travel estimate as a percentage of the US figure.

What does the Carbon Footprint Calculator compute?

The Carbon Footprint Calculator takes 5 input values and returns 4 results. Estimate your annual household carbon footprint from electricity, natural gas, driving, and flights, and compare it to the US average using standard emission factors.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The Carbon Footprint Calculator runs entirely in your browser using static JavaScript. Your inputs are never transmitted to CalculatorHive or any third party, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
