How It Works (Formula & Method)

Percentage change is calculated as (New − Original) ÷ |Original| × 100. A positive result is a percentage increase; a negative result is a percentage decrease. Dividing by the absolute value of the original keeps the sign of the change intuitive even when the original number is negative.

For example, going from 50 to 65 is a change of +15, and 15 ÷ 50 × 100 = 30%, so the value increased by 30%.

Worked Example

Below is a worked example using the calculator's default values. The same numbers are pre-filled in the form above so you can press Calculate and see the result without typing anything.

Inputs used:

  • Original Value: 50
  • New Value: 65

With these inputs, the calculator computes the metrics shown in the Results panel. Change any value and press Calculate again to see how the result responds — the live widget and the chart both update instantly.

Tips & Considerations

Percentage change is not symmetric: a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall does not return you to the start. Also distinguish "percentage change" from "percentage points" — going from 10% to 15% is a 5-percentage-point rise but a 50% relative increase.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100. If the result is positive it is a percentage increase; if negative, a percentage decrease.

What is the difference between percent change and percentage points?

Percentage points measure the arithmetic difference between two percentages (10% to 15% is 5 points). Percent change measures the relative change (10% to 15% is a 50% increase). They answer different questions.

What does the Percentage Change Calculator compute?

The Percentage Change Calculator takes 2 input values and returns 3 results. Calculate the percentage increase or decrease between two numbers, along with the absolute change and whether the value rose or fell.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The Percentage Change Calculator runs entirely in your browser using static JavaScript. Your inputs are never transmitted to CalculatorHive or any third party, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
