Waist-to-Hip Ratio
Health Risk Category

How It Works (Formula & Method)

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) divides the circumference of your waist by the circumference of your hips. Because the ratio is unitless, you can use centimetres or inches as long as both measurements use the same unit. Measure the waist at its narrowest point and the hips at their widest.

The World Health Organization associates higher WHR with greater cardiovascular and metabolic risk. For men, risk rises above about 0.90; for women, above about 0.85. A higher ratio indicates more abdominal ("apple-shaped") fat, which is more strongly linked to health risk than hip and thigh fat.

Worked Example

Below is a worked example using the calculator's default values. The same numbers are pre-filled in the form above so you can press Calculate and see the result without typing anything.

Inputs used:

  • Waist (same unit as hip): 80
  • Hip (same unit as waist): 100
  • Sex: female

With these inputs, the calculator computes the metrics shown in the Results panel. Change any value and press Calculate again to see how the result responds — the live widget and the chart both update instantly.

Tips & Considerations

WHR is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It complements — but does not replace — BMI, body-fat percentage, and clinical assessment. Measure over bare skin or light clothing, keep the tape level, and do not pull it tight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?

The World Health Organization considers a ratio at or below 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women to indicate lower health risk. Values above these thresholds are associated with increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

How do I measure waist and hips correctly?

Measure your waist at its narrowest point, usually just above the belly button, and your hips at the widest point around the buttocks. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin, and breathe normally.

What does the Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator compute?

The Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator takes 3 input values and returns 2 results. Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and see your associated health-risk category, based on World Health Organization cut-off points for men and women.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator runs entirely in your browser using static JavaScript. Your inputs are never transmitted to CalculatorHive or any third party, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
